Latest Nepal Photo

Kumari. A living goddess. Yes, really, a GODDESS. Believed by Nepali
people to be earthly reincarnations of Gods, some girl children are
selected and kept inside temples, only to come out on special occasions.
That is, until their first menstruation. Then they are returned to normal
society where they have to come to terms with no longer being regarded
as divine. There is currently a court case running in Nepal to have this
tradition changed, based on the human rights of the Kumaris.
Photographed 9. May 2008, more photos filed under Culture : Religion.

• Hinduism and Buddhism combined
RELIGION: PHOTO FEATURE - (Draft article)

I once met a Nepali teenage girl who introduced herself as Vishnu. That also happens to be the name of a Hindu God. But she was wearing a t-shirt with an image of Buddha. Confused as I was, I asked her “so are you a Hindu or a Buddhist?”...

• Tackling poverty with football
NEPAL: SOCIAL DOCUMENTARY - Released 31 March 2008

At least 5.000 children in Nepal live a high-risk life on the streets. The country faces a wide range of problems and there is practically no state welfare system in place to help these children. The task to help the orphans and street children have instead been left to an inadequate number of private and donor sponsored NGO’s...

• Girija Prasad Koirala
NEPAL: BIOGRAPHY - Released 1 November 2007

Mr. G. P. Koirala has played a central part in Nepali politics most of his life. In the 1950's and 60's, he was imprisoned several times for his political activism in the Nepal Congress party. His political career culminated in 1991 when he was elected Prime Minister...

• Landless in Kathmandu - but not homeless
NEPAL: SOCIAL DOCUMENTARY - Released 24 August 2007

At least 20.000 people in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, are living an uncertain existence in small slum-like settlements around town. Locally known as Sukumbasi's they are squatters who have settled down and constructed very simple houses on land that doesn't belong to them...

• Divine sex in the Himalayas
NEPAL: HISTORICAL DOCUMENTARY - Updated January 2008

...Erotic wood carving is widespread in certain temples and areas of Nepal. And they don’t leave much to the imagination. In fact, compared to the modern day X-rated stuff, these fine-art ancient sculptures display what must have been a rather impressive imagination among their creators. ..

• Handmade paper production
NEPAL: SMALL BUSINESS - Released 12 April 2007

Low income workers across Nepal are finding employment in the production of exclusive handmade paper. From the rural areas to the cities, thousands of people are daily working in paper factories employing a simple, old-fashioned manufacturing process that has been used in Nepal for ages...
