PHOTO TUTORIAL:
A Photographer's Thoughts
Published 26th May 2008

I love photography! I am also a fairly thoughtful and structured kind of person with a passion for writing. So sooner or later it had to happen: An article series on photography (index below).

I don’t claim to be #1 in anything, but I’ve worked professionally with photography for some years now and of course I’ve gathered a lot of experience. It’s been helpful for me and I think it might also be useful to you if (1) you’d like to learn photography or (2) you’re trying to get established as a pro. I myself have also re-learned a few things while writing this, which leads me to believe that (3) there’s also a few gems here and there for the more seasoned pro shooters. Never stop learning.

There’s tips and tricks here about the actual photography in itself, on how to shoot, how to compose etc, but also about all those related things, not exactly involving having the camera in your hand. The way it has turned out for me, working as an independent photographer / photojournalist, the actual photography work is no more than 20% of what I’m doing. At the most. Writing articles, doing research, promoting the business, pitching the story, getting submissions ready etc. All that is what takes the most of my time. And that’s why I’ll also include some of these fringe topics in the articles here.

I’ll add more articles to the series over the summer, and eventually compile the whole thing into an eBook on photography, illustrated with some of my own photos. That’s the idea, the articles are available for you to read here as a free online course in photography, however, there’ll be this “luxury edition” coming up later in the year (2008).
